Movie of the Week – The Shipment

Posted in Movies on August 29, 2008 by mobflix

Movie of the week – The Shipment (Mobflix rating 2.5 stars out of 5)

Paul Rodriguez, Robert Loggia, Matthew Modine and Elizabeth Berkeley star in The Shipment. This is comedy about a hijacked shipment of drugs…. (actually Viagra). That’s right, Viagra.

In this film a shipment of Viagra gets hijacked and the Mob as well as the local sheriff(Matthew Modine) are on the trail. In addition, Matthew Modine helps a damsel in distress, Elisabeth Berkeley. This movie is pretty funny, and I kept expecting Elisabeth Berkeley to take off her clothes, but that is not to be.

The Mobsters are a bunch of bumbling idiots. Nicholas Turturro, plays a mob boss with anger management issues. His fits of anger are over the top and pretty funny.

Movie of the Week – Thursday

Movie of the week – Thursday (Mobflix rating 3.5 out of 4 stars)

Casey (Thomas Jones) is your run-of-the-mill ex-drug dealer work from home Architect. It is Thursday morning when his past catches up with him. Casey’s partner Nick (Aaron Eckhart), show up with a load of heroin and Casey destroys it. While Nick is on the run, several hit people arrive at Casey’s house looking for the shipment and to eliminate Casey.

Each hit person who comes to Casey’s house has their own special and unique way of dispatching their victims. We see a Rastafarian Pizza Delivery Hit man, then there’s a specialist who prides himself in torturing his victims to death, and best of all there is the femme fatale Hitwoman who has a very special way of taking care of her victims.

Paulina Porizkova has a fantastic role as Dallas a latex clad Hitwoman who has sex with her targets before offing them. In real life, Paulina Porizkova is married to Ric Ocasek, the lead singer of the Cars. During the 1980’s, Paulina was one of the hottest international supermodels of the decade. In this film we not only see a fantastic performance from Dallas, but we also get to see her in her birthday suit as she ties up Casey and has sex with him before offing him.

There is also a great flashback scene with Casey and Nick where a coke deal goes bad.

This is one of my favorite films, I give Thursday 3.5 out of 4 stars.

Book Review – Fools Die by Mario Puzo

Book Review – Fools Die by Mario Puzo (Mobflix rating 3 stars out of 4)

Combine the series Madmen with Las Vegas, Hollywood, New York, and Tokyo. Throw in a connected Casino Manager skimming money for the Mob, an arrogant Hemingway type author, movie producers, agents, actors, actresses, and a Japanese business tycoon and you have the making s of Fools Die.

Puzo manages to weave all these elements together with plenty of late 1950’s / early 1960’s male chauvinism, sex, alcohol, and gambling, sprinkled with King Arthur and Merlyn the Magician.

The book centers around John Merlin, an orphaned WWII vet and his adventures as a gambler, author, screenwriter, and Army clerk on the take.

We give Fools Die by Mario Puzo 3 out of 4 stars

Ever seen the Godfather on a football field before?

Posted in Uncategorized on August 7, 2008 by mobflix

This week’s blog is about execution – literally and figuratively. This weekend is the Drum & Bugle Corps International (DCI) Championships in Bloomington Indiana. As an homage to these hard working individuals, we are proud to show you the Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps, from Concord, CA, and their interpretation of the Godfather from 2006.

Watch how well they execute their performance. While watching this feature, not only are you hearing the musical score from the film, but pay attention to the following visual cues:

  • Marionette strings
  • Cross that turns into a dagger in a heart
  • Horse head flags
  • Empty chair with hat and roses

Enjoy

My Latest Obsession – MyLeftFootLoose.com

Posted in Uncategorized on August 5, 2008 by mobflix

If you are a movie fanatic like I am you will not be able to resist this website. http://www.myleftfootloose.com is a site dedicated to mashing up movies. Combine two or more movies and see what happens.

Ever since I found this site, I am constantly thinking of movie mashups from mobster flicks (of course) to sci fi flicks that are ripe for mashing.

Here are a few examples of what you can find on http://www.myleftfootloose.com:

  • Lean On Me + Roger & Me = Lean On Roger & Me
  • It Came From Outer Space + Office Space = It Came From Office Space
  • The Sure Thing + The Swamp Thing = The Sure Swamp Thing
  • Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie + Silence of the Lambs = Mel Brooks Silent Movie of the Lambs

Be warned, once you start, you wont be able to stop.

Movie of the Week – Bugsy Malone

Movie of the week – Bugsy Malone (Mobflix rating 4 stars out of 4)

Imagine a musical about the mob in the 1930’s during prohibition. Now imagine it has an all kid cast. In addition the kids shoot cream pie machine guns and drive pedal cars. Now add the hottest child stars of the time.

Now you have Bugsy Malone. Starring Scott Baio as the lead character and Jodie Foster as Tallulah as flapper showgirl in a speakeasy. Scott Baio is Bugsy Malone, you basic mob freelancer. Bugsy helps on of the local gangsters run illegal root beer and obtain the latest in child-mob weapon technology, the splurge gun. Before the splurge gun, whackings were done by a simple pie in the face. If you got hit with a pie, that was a sign you were whacked.

Along comes the splurge gun. This weapon is a Tommy Gun that shoot cream. Mobster gangs with these weapons roam the streets and conduct drive by hits, spraying their target with whip cream.

The cars are antique cars from the 1930’s, but they are miniaturized for kids and powered by pedaling.

The musical score composed by Paul Williams is fantastic as well. The kids singing is over-dubbed by adult singers. Remember the animated Coke commercial that looks like Grand Theft Auto? The sing a song called “Give a Little Love.” That song is from Bugsy Malone.

I cannot recommend this movie enough. Seeing Jodie Foster as a flapper girl knowing how great her career will become is really something to see.

The finale musical number is one of my all time favorites. There is a massive shoot out / pie fight in the Speak Easy that ends in the finale musical number with everyone covered in cream pies singing their hearts out.

When I am asked to recommend a movie that no one has seen before, this is the first one I tell them.

I give Bugsy Malone 4 stars out of 4
